SEO

Now that you’ve got your website up, you want to see some traffic.

Huh? Doesn’t that just come naturally!

No, it doesn’t. Very few people are that lucky.

You need to optimize your site, so the search engines will find it, hence the term SEO or search engine optimization. There are 2 forms of SEO: White Hat & Black Hat. White hat SEO is using techniques that are “acceptable” for the search engines and will get you results in the longterm. Black Hat SEO can get you results quickly, but can also get you banned very quickly by Google and friends. So we here at GoogleGoogle are going for the longterm solution. Sorry guys!

Ok, we’re starting with basic SEO first. We’ll do more advanced techniques in another post.Â

Technique # 1

Assuming you the goal of your site or the niche your tageting, the first step would be to choose you keywords. What would people type into Google search if they’re trying to find you’re site? Enlist the help of friends & family and ask them to come up with keywords they would use to find your site. Decide on at least one maximum 3 keywords. Youll need these later on.

Technique # 2

Check your competitors website and find out what keywords they’re using. In Internet Explorer click on the view —> source and look for the following pieces of code:

<title>, <meta name=”description”>Â and

<meta name=”keywords”>.

The same goes for Firefox. (By the way if you don’t have the Firefox browser installed make sure you get it! It is an teriffic and essential tool for a webmaster(that’s you!). It has all sort of handy add ons you can use while building your site. Find a link for the downloadpage at the bottom of this post.) Viewing the source of you competitors is not illegal, it’s even essential! And if you’re ranking higer than they are, it’s even essential!

Technique #3

Use tools to find your keywords. There are numberous tools out there that will tell how many searches there are on your chosen keywords and will also give you suggestions for keywords.

Technique #4

Content is King! SE bots (Google) love content especially in the beginning of the page, so make sure your keywords are in the first paragraph. But don’t overdo it! The bots don’t appreciate keyword stuffing and will think you’re trying to spam. Stick to a keyword density of about 5%. Don’t use to many graphics or flash animation in your content; the bots can’t read them.

Technique #5

Use <H1> and <H2> tags. Bot really like these tags. Same goes for using bold or italic in your text. But again don’t overdo it! You site has to readable for humans as well!

Technique #6

In the head section of a HTML page you need to specify <title> &Â <meta>-tags, especially the description and keyword tags. This way SE bots will know what your page is about, so put your keywords to good use! You need to do this for every site of your page.

Technique # 7

Use anchortext. SE’s love it! You can link inside your own website using html like this:

<a href= http://www.googlegoogle.net>googlegoole</a>

Note googlegoogle between the > and </a>? That’s called anchor text, so you should use you keywords in there as well.

Technique # 8

Submit your site to directories. There are lot’s of directories to submit your site to.

  • Altavista
  • Google
  • Yahoo
  • Msn

And so on. Do a search in Google for directories and lots of them should come up.

Ok there you have it! Some basic SEO techniques to get you started. We’ll get into some more advanced techniques later on. Now take a break, you’ve earned it!
